Ya’Donnis Hardaway was recently enjoying campus life as a senior and wrestling star. Today, he is a full-time laboratory scientist at a major nuclear facility, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. This incredible opportunity was made possible through a partnership between Allen and SRNS supported by a DOE Staff Grant.
Ya’Donnis, his professor at the time, Dr. Oluwole was discovered while speaking at a symposium recommended by Ariyo. Meeting well-known scientist Dr. It led to a promising mentorship with James Maner and gave Ya’Donnis the opportunity to immerse himself in a hands-on learning environment.
Reflecting on his experience, Ya’Donnis addressed the AU students, saying, “When Dr. Ariyo asks you to do something, please do it! It could change your life.”
Before completing his summer internship with Savannah River, he was immediately offered a full-time position three months after graduation. His work will involve using advanced equipment such as the Scanning Electron Microscope. “Experiences are key to being successful beyond college,” notes Ya’Donnis.
His journey is a powerful testament to the success of Allen University’s academic-to-workforce transition pipeline. It also highlights the impact of strategic partnerships in creating meaningful career opportunities for students.
Now calling Aiken, SC, home, Ya’Donnis has officially transitioned from intern to employee. “I never thought presenting at a symposium would lead to becoming a scientist, but it did,” he said. “During these uncertain times, students often wonder if their dreams are still possible. I want them to know, they are!”
Recently, Ya’Donnis his mentor Dr. Ariyo, Dr. Maner and visited Allen with key members of the team responsible for strengthening the partnership between SRNS and Allen University.
