Today, the American Education Council (ACE) announced a study of Carnegie (R1), a study showing the “very high research costs and doctor production”. R1 is widely considered the highest research classification among US colleges and universities. Howard University is the only historic black college or university (HBCU) achieving R1 appointment.
“The achievement of the R1 of the University of Howard demonstrates our research and confirms our deep commitment to the most pressing questions and technological innovation,” HOWARD University President Ben Vinson III, Doctor of Philosophy. “As a leader in the next generation’s evolution, we ensure that the benefits of discoveries and progress, including all communities, including solutions and strategic use, and the use of the knowledge in the inclusive well-being and sustainable.”
According to ACE, on average, R1 institutions “spent at least $ 50 million in research and development and produces at least 70 research doctors.” Howard exceeded the criteria in both categories.

- Howard University Cancer Center is the only cancer center in an HBCU, which has prepared the next generation of cancer treatment services and oncology professionals and cancer researchers in an HBCU.
