I knew that this was the time when we covered HBCU athletics for more than 30 years.
There are no lack of content about HBCUS these days. Find documentaries, media coverage, social media moments and yes, even books on the topic. But what indeed pushed me to write HBCU SPORTS 101: A guide to understand black college athletics Many of these narratives had a lot of people in fact Experienced HBCU experience.
This is a kind of injustice for me.
And I say that with all respect. But if the national media recognizes how many of our national media organizations are, people walked in those classrooms, and marching in those bands are best equipped to explain these stories in these areas. At least I had a sense of responsibility to make sure these stories are explained by a different lens.
A promising perspective in practice
I don’t go to this place as far as edge. I’m not here for a trend. I’ve been there for three decades because I’ve been there. As a journalistas a storyteller and an HBCU graduate.
When you spend a lot of time immersed in a real misunderstanding culture, you start to see how it describes and really what it is. People outside often Look at what deficits of HBCUs. But those inside? We see how much they build, less and contradictions. This book is expected to reflect: not only our difficulties, but our strength.

This book is for anyone who wants a true understanding of HBCU SPORTS: People who want to know what students, parents, graduates, sports fans and even the syringe. HBCU Sports 101 All for all.
It is not ashamed of these truths. Matching. The athletes that are evading. Media gaps. However, despite everything, HBCUS also shows that it continues to create perfection. In the field. In the classroom. In the world.
Things that people often miss
HBCU SPORTS never tried to imitate the main college athletics. From the first day we must do our way. Not because it is fashionable but Because it was necessary.
We have created our own classics. Our own containers. Our own group of culture. Our own game style. Our own pride.
And we didn’t want to confirm. We just did it.
This independence – this creativity – HBCU sports is something that makes it so unique. Very often abducted. I wrote this book to help change this book.

Yes, we are still the challenges, old and new passages. But this was always part of the story. What matters is that we continue to slip forward. We are not only survival, but we move forward in our own conditions, we are moving forward at our pace.
HBCUS did not create to win the championship. Created to educate and strengthen black minds. This is the mission. Everything, including our athletic traditions, flows.
