Since graduating from UTA, what has been your greatest accomplishment?
I am proud that I’ve found my niche in my career and have been able to be promoted several times, but more importantly I’m proud that I’ve put myself in a position to give back. I’ve had young students reach out to me via Facebook or LinkedIn to pick my brain. They have wanted to know how to navigate through the real world, best practices for networking, help with their resume, and personal finance advice or negotiating salaries. I feel accomplished knowing I am considered a resource to students.

What has been your biggest challenge since graduating?
Improving my presence in the workplace, specifically with clients and potential clients. Early in my career, I found it somewhat difficult to have a voice in client meetings with senior management as a young, junior employee. Over time I became more comfortable with this as I had more practice. Repetition is key!

Do you take part in any initiatives, community service, or projects that make you proud?
I am a member of the Middle Market Banking DIB (Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) Council at Capital One. I have also participated in the Pan Mass Challenge over the last few years, a fundraising bike-a-thon held in Massachusetts that raises money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I completed a 25-mile ride last year.

What advice would you give to young black students entering higher education?
I would tell young black students to do thorough research on different industries and not to sell themselves short when it comes to career possibilities. I was not sure what I wanted to do for my career until I was a junior or senior in undergrad; I honestly attribute that to a lack of familiarity with certain industries. It can be challenging to picture yourself in a certain career if you don’t know anyone in that field. Don’t let that deter you from aiming high.

What goals do you have for yourself or your career?
One of my main goals is to continue to carve out a niche for myself and climb the ranks within finance. If I could go back in time to when I was an undergraduate, I’d remind myself that it takes time to figure out what best suits your skill set and that it’s totally normal to pivot to different opportunities before you find out what is best for you. I’ve found something that I truly love to do, and I’m focused on being one of the best at that.

Did you feel welcome at UTA? What made you feel included?
I felt extremely welcomed at UTA. UTA is truly a melting pot with diverse representation among all groups. I was able to meet people from different countries and socioeconomic backgrounds. Having exposure to people from all walks of life was very beneficial after graduating.

What traditions do you celebrate or honor during black history month?
I travel a lot for work, so during Black History Month each year I make an effort to attend a BHM event or see an exhibit in whichever city I travel to during the month of February. For example, if I’m traveling to DC, I’ll stop in the National Museum of African American History and Culture, or the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville, TN.

What are any goals you have for the black community?
I would like the black community to continue to expand its representation in industries where we are underrepresented like finance and law. Diverse perspectives are extremely valuable in many organizations.

Please share three fun facts about yourself:

  1. I love to travel, and I’ve gotten pretty good at “travel hacks” finding last minute deals to international countries! In 2019 I booked a last-minute trip to Paris three days ahead of time and was able to find a good last-minute deal on a flight and hotel using several online resources.
  2. During undergrad, I changed my major almost overnight and made a push to do something business related. I was at a holiday gathering over Christmas break when my aunt mentioned the idea of going into finance. I switched from advertising to economics and never looked back.
  3. I am a self-proclaimed mixologist (a hobby I picked up during the pandemic). I can make everything from an espresso martini to an old fashioned.
