Deer invades Rockland business on Thanksgiving Day

Police often respond to alarm calls over holiday weekends, but Rockland Police were deer-ly surprised by the hoofed criminal that broke into a retailer on Thanksgiving Day.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, officers responded to a burglar alarm at the unidentified business, which was closed, at 1 p.m.

“Upon their arrival, they found a large front glass window smashed out and items knocked over inside,” police said in a statement.

Believing the burglar to still be inside – and of the two-legged variety – officers from Rockland and nearby towns surrounded the building and began searching for the would-be thief.

“They found the suspect was in fact a white tail deer, possibly trying to get a head start on some black Friday shopping,” police said.

An officer’s body camera footage, posted to the Facebook page, showed the deer, possibly a doe, dashing past the officer to the front of the store.

Police said officers and store managers got the animal out safely. No humans were hurt, and the deer did not appear to be injured.
