Hawaii Island police are investigating the theft of numerous road signs that were reported between Aug. 30 and Sept. 21 along Mamalahoa Highway in the areas of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Pahala, Black Sands Beach, Naalehu and Waiohinu.

According to Lt. Pernell Hanoa, state highways personnel were the first to notice the missing signs — nearly 20 of them have been reported thus far.

They include nene goose crossings, tsunami evacuation route and Hawaii scenic byway signs.

Individuals or people caught will be arrested and potentially charged with theft, according to Lt. Hanoa.
