Murder Suspect Sergio Brown Denied Pretrial Release

Former NFL player Sergio Brown, who has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother and concealing a homicide, was denied a pretrial release by Cook County (IL) Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez, who ordered him to stay in prison until his next court appearance, the Associated Press reports.

After Brown was apprehended on suspicion of killing his mother, Myrtle Brown, prosecutors said he bought a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico, and was the last known person seen with her.

Brown was extradited to the Chicago suburb of Maywood where he was charged with first-degree murder and concealing a dead body, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

His public defender Robert Fox said during the pretrial hearing that no one witnessed Sergio Brown kill his mother.

Sergio Brown, 35, lived in Maywood, Ill., with his mother, Myrtle, 73.

Concerned relatives contacted authorities after they lost contact with the mother and son. Myrtle Brown was found near a creek in Maywood on Sept. 16; her death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner due to injuries related to an assault. Sergio Brown was seen burning fabric on the night that she died, Sept. 14, according to Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jose Villarreal.

Sergio Brown went to Cancun Sept. 15 and allegedly rented two homes in Colombia before he was caught by law enforcement. Mexican officials extradited him to Illinois on Oct. 7.

Brown’s next court appearance is Nov. 22.

Brown played in the NFL for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Buffalo Bills after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He played in the league until 2016. He played his collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame after attending Proviso East High School in Maywood.
