Phil Ruhlman always wanted to open his own steakhouse. Now that dream is coming true as he prepares to break ground on Ox-Bow Crossing. The development will not only include his business but a few others meant to spur economic development in Ashland. Ruhlman has been selling what he calls the ‘best steak around,’ out of his food truck since December. His family’s been in the meat business well before his time. His grandparents ran a meat and grocery market in Kansas City which held the slogan “meet me a Ruhlman’s” for years. He also credits his cousins with having one of the largest black angus ranches in the United States, which provides the meat for his food truck. Ruhlman will soon open his own steakhouse at Ox-Bow Crossing in Ashland. He said the whole project has been a family effort. “I found this land about six acres and two of my six brothers joined me,” he said. One brother handled the real estate and the other will handle the construction. The lot bought for the development sits along Highway 6 by the Lincoln Water System. It will soon hold Ruhlman’s Steakhouse with an event center, a Runza, a health center and an apartment complex and a trail. “What started out as a project for a steakhouse ended up being a project that actually creates a different front door for all of Ashland,” Ruhlman said. He believes Ox-Bow Crossing will help contribute to the town’s growth. “This is a town that wants to grow, this is a town that wants to bring in new jobs, and new people to it,” he said. Mayor Jim Anderson said the new development is wonderful and he believes it will attract more people to visit Ashland too. “It’s just a big improvement and a lot of big things are happening along Highway 6 which will definitely enhance the community,” Anderson said. The Ruhlmans will break ground on the development Tuesday. Ox-Bow crossing is expected to be completed by April of next year.
