Newark Hospital: Black President and CEO Makes History

NEWARK, NJ — Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s 2017 Black History Month celebration recently made history when – for the first time – an African-American president and CEO presided over the festivities, officials say.

During the Feb. 24 event, the hospital’s president and CEO Darrell Terry Sr. – a Newark native who was born at the center he works at – reflected on his 20 years of service, stating that the center is “truly a part of the fabric of Newark.”

“Over the years, I’ve watched the Black History Month celebrations at Newark Beth Israel evolve into a vibrant reflection of our employees and a large portion of the community we serve,” Terry said.

According to hospital administrators, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center began celebrating Black History Month more than 30 years ago. Founded by Alma Beatty, a dedicated employee and community champion, the celebration has evolved from a humble gathering of interested employees and residents to a month-long set of cultural and educational events.

According to hospital administrators:

“A graduate of Rutgers University, with a concentration in business management, Terry received his master of healthcare administration from Seton Hall University and a master of public health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. He is board-certified in healthcare administration and a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Terry also attained a certificate of participation from Harvard University’s School of Public Health Leadership Strategies Program and is a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow. He sits on several boards and has received numerous awards throughout his career.”

Terry began his career at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey in operations management in 1997. He was named senior vice president of operations in 2006, became chief operating officer in 2011 and he assumed his current position as president and CEO in May of 2016.
