On October 21, the Detroit synagogue president, Samantha Woll, was found stabbed to death by Michigan police outside her home on Joilet Place.

At about 6:30 a.m., officials received a call about a lifeless person lying on the ground, suffering several stab wounds to her body. When investigators arrived, they did not immediately identify the woman.

Isaac Agree of the Downtown Synagogue put out a statement on Facebook, stating, “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Samantha Woll, our board President. At this point, we do not have any more information, but will share more when it becomes available. May her memory be a blessing.”

Kia Chevon stated, “Wow! I just met her, and she was so enthusiastic and made us feel welcomed. So sad. My thoughts to her family and friends.”

George Liller commented, “My memory of Ms. Woll is one of exuberance, joy, and pride at the reopening event a few weeks ago. May her memory forever be a blessing.”

According to Chief James White, the Detroit Police chief, there is no indication that the crime was prompted by antisemitism.

He stated, “The investigation into the death of Ms. Woll remains ongoing. At this time, however, no evidence has surfaced suggesting that this crime was motivated by antisemitism.”

The Detroit Police Department is partnering with the FBI to “forensically analyze all of the information. They will ascertain the timeline that ultimately led to Ms. Woll’s death. Individuals with information that may further this investigation are being interviewed”, continued White.

Officials are determining if Woll’s death was a homicide after noticing a trail of blood that led “officers to the victim’s residence, which is where the crime is believed to have occurred,” police stated in a statement.

Woll was very involved in the community. She formerly served as the political director for General Dana Nessel’s re-election campaign. Woll later worked as a deputy district director for U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin.

Both of them released statements on X, explaining how her death was unexpected and the strength she exuded to improve the organizations.

Nessel described Woll by stating that “Sam was as kind a person as I’ve ever known. She was driven by her sincere love of her community, state, and country. Sam truly used her faith and activism to create a better place for everyone,” while also including an image of them.
