shed antler collection, black bear hunt, fur trade

WYOMING — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) is requesting comments from the public regarding potential changes to its guidelines surrounding black bear hunting season, regulation governing fur dealers and collection of shed antlers and horns.

WGFD will also host eight public meetings about these changes, including one in Jackson on Nov. 16.

First on the docket is a re-evaluation of black bear hunting season. Specific proposals have not yet been published, but changes to hunting season dates, annual female mortality limits and/or hunting season structures will be made available to the public ahead of the in-person meetings, according to WGFD’s statement. Alterations to limits on bear bait containers are also on the table.

Fur dealer regulation changes will allow WGFD to to revoke fur sale licenses from companies who fail to keep and submit adequate records. Licenses will also be subject to cancelation if businesses do not cooperate with the department’s inspections.

Rules covering the collection of shed antlers and horns will be edited to give Wyoming residents a seven-day head start. Residents can begin retrieving antlers and horns on May 1, 2024, while non-residents can begin on May 8. Non-residents will also need a conservation stamp before beginning to collect.

WGFD will accept written comments submitted before Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. Comments can be submitted online, via mail or in person at one of the meetings listed below. Mailed comments must be sent to: Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Regulations, 3030 Energy Lane, Casper, WY 82604
