The Best Black-Owned Restaurants to Check Out Next Time You’re in Montgomery, Alabama


Montgomery, Alabama, has long been a destination rooted in Black culture and history. As one of the epicenters of the Civil Rights Movement, the place where Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus and the bus boycotts in general—the Southern city has always been a place where Black people have been empowered to not only seek change, but to make it as well.

On August 6, 2023, Montgomery was once again in the news for racial activity, after several Black men and women rushed to the aid of a local riverboat worker, who was jumped by a group of white men. Deemed the Montgomery Riverfront Brawl, the events of the day have made its rounds on nearly every news channel and social media platform.

While we certainly don’t condone violence in any way, we’d like to take a wild guess and say that the destination will soon be on the travel bucket lists of many Black and Brown folks in the near future. Even if it’s just to take a photo in front of the now wildly recognizable riverfront.

Plant Bae

If you follow a plant-based diet, be sure to check out Plant Bae. There, you’ll find vegan twists on everything from filling burgers to Philly cheesesteaks, wings and more. Credited with being the city of Montgomery’s only fully vegan restaurant, the eatery is poised to become a staple in the downtown community. 

Mrs. B’s Home Cooking

In true Southern fashion, this establishment whips up some of the city’s best finger-licking soul food. With staples like fried chicken, ribs and all the sides to match—Mrs. B’s is like getting a plate of grandma’s cooking even on vacation.

Krab Kingz Seafood

Seafood boils are all the rave right row, and Krab Kingz is said to have one of the best in Montgomery. Not only can you get perfectly steamed—and sauced—crab legs during your visit, but you can also fill up on other seafood favorites, including: fried shrimp and mussels, as well as sides like fried okra and corn.

Trish Ann and Big Ash Southern Cooking

The name alone lets us know, this food will be everything we’re looking for and more. After recent issues with their landlord, the business has shifted to delivery and catering only—temporarily. Menu standouts include: smothered chicken, mac and cheese, collard greens, grilled burgers and homemade vanilla cake.

Brenda’s Bar-B-Que Pit

The building may be small, but just know the food packs a mighty punch. The family owned and operated spot has been cooking up smoked and grilled meats since 1942. Our go-to order will always be the ribs plate with potato salad, baked beans and a lemonade. And, in the spirit of something sweet, we’re always asking what the dessert of the month is.
