US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to visit Birmingham to celebrate grant

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is scheduled to visit Birmingham Wednesday to highlight a multimillion-dollar award for the city’s Historic 4th Avenue Black Business District.

According to Rep. Terri Sewell’s office, the U.S. Department of Transportation gifted $14,556,040 to “reconnect” the district by improving access to businesses and neighborhoods by converting the street from a one-way to a two-way road.

A news conference will be held outside the Carver Theater.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is also supposed to be in attendance.

According to Sewell, Birmingham’s Historic 4th Avenue Business District was once a thriving hub of Black businesses and community before it was divided by the construction of Interstate 65 in the 1960s.

Funding from this grant will be used to redesign 15 blocks of streets.
