What’s open, closed for Veterans Day


Veterans Day, a federal holiday, is observed annually on Nov. 11. Since that date falls on a Saturday this year, many county facilities will be closed or have adjusted hours on Friday, Nov. 10.

Here is a roundup of what’s opened and closed across the state of Hawaii. 

The City and County of Honolulu: 

  • TheBus will operate on a state holiday schedule on Friday. Visit thebus.org for route and schedule information.
  • The Skyline will operate on a state holiday schedule on Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. 
  • The Neal S. Blaisdell Center box office will be closed Friday.
  • People’s Open Markets will not be held Friday.
  • All satellite city halls and driver licensing centers will be closed Friday.
  • Refuse will be collected and transfer stations, convenience centers, H-POWER and the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill are open Friday. 
  • Parks and botanical gardens are open Friday.
  • Municipal golf courses are open Friday. 
  • The Honolulu Zoo will be open Friday. 
  • Motorists are cautioned that parking will be restricted in Lanikai over the three-day holiday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • On-street parking will be free, except for the meters on Kalakaua Avenue along Queen Kapiolani Park, metered parking lots, and meters on specific Waikiki streets on Friday. View the list of Waikiki streets here.
  • Traffic lanes will not be coned for contraflow Friday.

County of Kauai:

  • County of Kauai offices will be closed Friday.
  • All neighborhood centers will be closed Friday.
  • The Kauai Bus will be operating on its regular schedule on Friday. 
  • The Reynolds Recycling HI5 Redemption Center, fronting the Lihue refuse transfer station, will be closed on Saturday.
  • The HI5 Redemption Centers operated by KCRS in Kapaa and Kīlauea will be closed.
  • The Kekaha Landfill will be closed Saturday.
  • All refuse transfer stations will be closed Saturday.
  • The Waimea and Kapaa swimming pool will be closed Saturday.

County of Maui:

  • County of Maui offices will be closed on Friday.
  • The Central Maui Landfill and EKO Compost Green Waste will be open from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, while the Olowalu Recycling & Refuse Convenience Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday.
  • The Hana Landfill, Lanai Landfill and Molokai Landfill will all be open Friday, but closed on Saturday.
