Norfolk State guard Diamond Johnson up for mid-major award

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State student-athlete Diamond Johnson was announced as one of 10 semifinalists for the 2024 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats on Wednesday afternoon.

This year’s list of semifinalists includes representatives from 10 teams and nine conferences. To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be “mid-major.”

In 12 starts for Norfolk State after missing the first 10 games of the season, Johnson leads the team in scoring averaging 20.6 points, 2.6 assists, and 5.8 rebounds, while shooting 42.7 percent from the floor and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Johnson, along with teammate Kierra Wheeler, were named to the 15-member Mid-Season Watch List, in January, as they only players from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

Five finalists will be announced in early March and the winner will be announced around the Final Four.
